An All-Church Daily Bible Study

18 February – 11 April 2015

Lent is the name for the period in the Christian church calendar leading up to Easter.  Similar to Advent, Lent is a season of reflection and expectation.  It’s a time to quiet our hearts and our busy lives, and to focus on Jesus. Perhaps easier said than done, right?

At ANCL, we don’t observe Lent in any specific, official or prescribed way.  However, as this year it immediately follows our sermon series on “Essentials of the Faith: Prayer and Scripture,” we recognize that this Lenten season provides a wonderful opportunity to put what we’ve been talking about on Sundays into practice in our daily lives.  To that end, ANCL would like to extend an opportunity for our whole church community to read and engage with the Word of God together during Lent 2015.

We will be using “Lent for Everyone: Luke, Year C,” a daily devotional guide written by respected and popular biblical scholar, Tom Wright.  Each day’s material includes a scripture reading, brief reflection, and prayer.   It is specifically designed to be manageable even for busy schedules, but by the end of the guide you will have read all of Luke, as well as Psalm readings for each Sunday.

The study material begins on “Ash Wednesday” (18 February) and ends the Saturday following Easter (11 April).

If you’d like to participate, please purchase a copy of the devotional guide by clicking on the image of the book, or via your favorite online retailer in either paperback or electronic form.  Make sure you purchase the guide for Year C (Luke)! Then, embark on the devotional along with your church family in one or more of the following ways:

Tuesday Evening Small Group

Kate and Brett Ballbach will host a 6-week small group discussion at their home in Limperstberg near Michel Lucius (on bus line and with easy parking).  The group will run Tuesday nights from 24 Feb to 31 March, from 8:00-9:30pm with coffee and dessert.  Sign-ups are on a first come, first served basis, so contact admin@ancl.lu as soon as possible if you’d like to join.  Please only sign up if you feel you can reasonably commit to the majority of the sessions.  As it is relatively late on a “school night,” this group is geared for adult participation.

Facebook Group – Lent 2015 ANCL

Screen Shot 2015-01-31 at 16.41.01Join our group on Facebook to discuss the daily readings, share reflections, or just for a little motivation and accountability to stick with it.  (It’s okay if you do fall a bit behind, you can catch up when you have time!). Visit the group as frequently as you wish during study, and you are not obligated to post anything.  Join by clicking here, and then click “Join Group” – the group admin/moderator will add you.

Find a Partner

Partner with someone from church—perhaps a friend, or even someone you don’t know well yet but would like to get to know better.  This person can be your discussion and/or accountability partner as you progress through the devotional.  Exchange contact information and decide if you’d like to meet periodically in person over coffee or a meal, encourage each other with text messages, or discuss your insights and inspirations over email.  Tailor your partnership to what will suit you both best.

Independent Study

You are of course welcome to go through the devotionals on your own, but while also gaining a sense of community and solidarity knowing that many others from church are delving into the same scripture passages alongside you each day!

Let’s support one another as we read and reflect upon God’s Word this Lenten season, allowing it to transform our lives and our community of faith for the glory of God.
